Fishing rodeo planned for new St. Tammany pier

Slidell, La. - The 1st Annual St. Tammany Fishing Pier Rodeo and opening celebration is taking place this Saturday, June 2nd.  Rodeo fishing will start at 5 AM, and the weigh station will close at 2 PM.  Fish will be weighed between 10 AM and 2 PM.

In addition to the fishing rodeo, there will be many other activities happening at the pier.  Todd Schaeffer's Restaurant will be providing food for purchase from 5 AM until the end of the rodeo.  A Kids Craft tent will offer three crafts for kids, involving painting and assembling a boat.

LA Wildlife and Fisheries will be selling fishing licenses, discussing rules and regulations, showing the types of fish found in Lake Pontchartrain, and providing casting lessons for the kids.  One or two biologists will be walking the pier throughout the day helping to identify fish, offer suggestions on fishing technique, and teaching how to properly bait a hook.

US Fish and Wildlife will be operating a wildlife match game and discussing the Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges.  The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation will be promoting their Save Our Lake program.  The Coastal Conservation Association will be doing cooking demonstrations and discussing their programs, as well as providing rod and reel combos for the first 200 kids at 10 AM.
