Mom, daughter die in Kenner house fire

Kenner, La. - A Kenner mother and her 5 year-old daughter have died after an early morning fire broke out in their Kenner home, according to the Louisiana State Fire Marshall.

The victims have been identified as 40 year-old Elideth Rumbo and her daughter Escarlett Rumbo.

The flames broke out around 3am in the 1800 block of 39th street in Kenner.

When firefighters approached the house the flames burst through a window melting one firefighter's mask and scorching his equipment.

Fire Chief John Hellmers said two adults were trying to get their kids out of harm's way, but at least one adult and a child got trapped.

The mother and child were taken to Ochsner Hospital in Kenner where they died.

Initial indications are that the fire started in the attic and spread to the rest of the structure.  The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A fund is set up at Capital One under the name Alex Barraza for anyone wanting to make a donation.  Also, those who wish to donate clothing, toiletries and toys can call Dona Reynaud at 909-4004.
