New Orleans mayor says he'll soon fill council vacancy

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu says he'll choose someone to temporarily fill a vacancy on the New Orleans City Council "in short order."

It's been 30 days since council member Stacy Head left a district seat to become a citywide "at-large" council member. The council had the responsibility to fill Head's vacant seat.

But members Jon Johnson and Cynthia Hedge-Morrell walked out of a May 3 meeting and boycotted two subsequent meetings, so the council couldn't muster the five-member quorum needed to conduct business.

On Friday, it became Landrieu's responsibility to fill the vacant seat. Landrieu said interested citizens should send him resumes. He did not say when he would appoint the new member. The council meets again on June 7. Johnson and Hedge-Morrell are expected to return then.
