Impaired driving crash claims life of Marrero man

Updated:

Marrero, La. - A Marrero man faces several charges following a fatal accident on LA 45, also known as Barataria Blvd.

Saturday, shortly before 3:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatal crash in the 5900 block of Barataria Blvd., approximately four miles south of LA 3134.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a 2006 Kia Optima, driven by 38-year-old Joseph L. Marshall, of Marrero, was traveling south on LA 45 at a high rate of speed. Marshall lost control of the Kia while exiting a curve and ran off the road to the right, then re-entered the roadway and crossed the northbound lane. He then overcorrected the vehicle and ran off the road to the right striking a tree.

The front passenger, 38-year-old John D. Pickney, of Marrero, was transported to West Jefferson Medical Center where he later died. Three rear seat passengers were transported to Ochsner Medical Center Westbank, including two juveniles who suffered minor injuries; and 36-year-old Nora Hinojosa, of Marrero, who also suffered moderate injuries. All occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Speed and impairment are suspected factors in the crash and toxicology tests for Marshall are pending.

Marshall was treated at Ochsner Medical Center Westbank for minor injuries and later transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and booked with vehicular homicide, three counts of vehicular negligent injuring, reckless operation, possession of a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, expired license plate and no insurance.
