Houma man dies in crash late Wednesday night

St. Charles Parish – Around 11:45p.m., police say 24-year-old Ryan Murtha lost control of his vehicle, struck the median and crashed into a metal guardrail around on US 61.

The accident happened on US 61 north, near LA 627 in St. Charles Parish.

Investigators say Murtha was driving his Nissan 350Z  north on US 61 in the right lane at a high rate of speed when he attempted to shift into the left lane in order to avoid a vehicle in the right lane and lost control of the vehicle.

Murtha then overcorrected the Nissan and it began to rotate and ran off the road to the right impacting a metal guardrail which crashed into the driver's door.

Murtha was pronounced dead on the scene.

Driver impairment is unknown at this time and toxicology results are pending an autopsy.

Police say Murtha was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and speed is a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
