Former mayor-warden to report to federal prison

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A former prison warden who was one of the longest serving mayors in Mississippi will soon be a federal inmate.

Former Walnut Grove Mayor Grady Sims is scheduled to report by Monday to a prison in Miami to serve seven months for telling a prisoner to lie about having sex with him.

The 61-year-old Sims was first elected mayor of the east-central Mississippi town of about 1,900 in 1981.

In October 2009, he became warden of the Walnut Grove Transition Center, a privately run prison.

He took the inmate to a hotel for sex in November 2009. He was recorded a few months later telling her to lie to investigators.

He also was indicted for sexual assault but the charge was dropped when he pleaded guilty to witness intimidation.
