Elderly caretaker killed in Gentilly group home; suspect arrested

New Orleans, La. - New Orleans police have apprehended a suspect in an overnight murder in Gentilly.  

Ricky Russell, 26, was booked with first degree murder of a 74 year-old woman.  The brutal death happened inside a group home in the 5900 block of Lafaye Street around 1 a.m.

Police say Russell bashed the woman's head with an air conditioning unit, and then wrapped a bag around her head.  He fled in her car a drove it into Lake Pontchartrain.  He got out of the car and was spotted on Lakeshore Drive by levee police. 

They stopped Russell for questioning and he confessed to the killing.

Police say the woman was a caretaker at the home where Russell previously lived.  According to police, the violence was the result of an ongoing argument between Russell and the victim.

Her identity has not been released.
