State education officials brief parents on voucher program

Updated:
New Orleans, La. -

State education officials want parents to educate themselves on the expanding voucher program.

Starting this school year, students across Louisiana will be able to take advantage of the program already in effect in New Orleans.  It uses public funds to allow students attending failing schools to transfer to private schools.

The Louisiana Department of Education says the vouchers give parents more options to give their children a quality education.

Officials handed out information on the application process Thursday.

Nicholas Bolt, DOE's|deputy chief of staff, said, "The program is open enrollment, so it's open to all students that want to participate in the program.  They don't have to meet an academic criteria or any other type of criteria to apply for these schools."

There's another meeting set for next Thursday in LaPlace.
