National Association of Black Journalists heads to New Orleans

Updated:

New Orleans, LA -- News makers from across the country are headed to New Orleans for the 37th Annual National Association of Black Journalists Convention & Career Fair.

On Sunday, volunteers with the Convention and Visitor's Bureau spent the day hard at work, stuffing bags for the convention.

"The National Association of Black Journalists is going to bring some pretty big names to New Orleans: Vice-President Biden, Al Sharpton, Mark Morial, Soledad O'Brien of CNN and Spike Lee," says Kelly Schulz of The New Orleans Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

There are approximately, 2,500 journalists and media professionals expected to attend, which is the largest annual gathering of journalists of color.

This year's theme is "New Platforms. New Directions. New Orleans."

It's been 29-years since NABJ held its last convention in the "Big Easy."

The journalists are expected to pour $3.5 million dollars into the local economy.

The public is welcome to attend a golf tournament, a 5 k-run, plus the reporters will help rebuild three homes affected by Hurricane Katrina.

NABJ will also be talking about the recent cutbacks at the Times Picayune and how to grow with the evolving media.

"And what does that mean? Are other cities going to face what New Orleans is facing and what does that mean for the profession of journalism," says Kelly Schulz of The Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

The National Association of Black Journalists will hold a public forum "Reforming Education In Post-Katrina Louisiana."

That takes place  Tuesday, June 19, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dillard University in the Professional Schools Building Georges Auditorium.
