New law allows electronic proof of insurance

Baton Rouge, La. - Starting next month, a smartphone can get you out of a ticket for not carrying proof of auto insurance.

Governor Bobby Jindal has signed into law a provision that allows drivers to show proof of auto insurance electronically. That means that, if you can look up your policy with an electronic device, you have your proof.

If you prefer paperwork, printed copies of insurance policies will remain acceptable proof of insurance.
