FEMA grant will help get Orleans Coroner's office and Morgue out of temporary facilities-WVUE FOX 8 photo
Washington, D.C.- A new FEMA hurricane recovery grant will help pay for the new home the Orleans Coroner's office has been lacking since Hurricane Katrina.
According to Senator Mary Landrieu and Representative Cedric Richmond, the $3.3 million dollar grant will go toward relocating and building a new, elevated Coroner's office and morgue.
Katrina swamped the old morgue in the Orleans Parish Courthouse. The Coroner's office has operated out of an assortment of temporary locations ever since, including one destroyed by fire last year.
The city has said construction on the new facility at Earhart and Claiborne Avenue should begin before the end of the year.
Two additional grants announced will provide more than $4 million dollars for recovery projects on the Tulane University Campus.
