The National Hurricane Center's latest advisory increases the odds an area of low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will develop into a tropical cyclone.

The system, which was unorganized yesterday, also "appears to be becoming better defined about 275 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River."

Forecasters said showers and thunderstorms have been increasing over the eastern Gulf.

"A tropical depression, or more likely a tropical storm, could form later today or tonight if the trend continues," according to the advisory.

The Hurricane Center now gives the system a "90 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone as it moves slow northward during the next 48 hours."

It said tropical storm watches or warnings could be required for part of the northern gulf coast over the weekend.

An Air Force Hurricane Hunter airplane is scheduled to investigate the system Saturday afternoon.
