State says N.O. area lost 4,000 jobs in May

Updated:

A fresh report from state officials finds the New Orleans area was down 4,000 jobs between April and May.  But the region was down just 500 positions over the year, according to nonseasonally adjusted Louisiana Workforce Commission figures released Friday.

"The New Orleans area had 528,100 jobs in May, fewer than the 532,100 in April and the 528,600 in May 2011," reads the Associated Press's report, reprinted online by New Orleans CityBusiness.  "The goods-producing sector was down 700 jobs over April and down 6,300 over 2011, while the service-providing sector was down 3,300 positions over the month but up 5,800 compared with a year ago.

"Louisiana, meanwhile, was down 4,400 over the month but up 39,800 over the year," the report continues.
