New Orleans, La. -- Drivers may have extra spring in their steps.
The price of gasoline has dropped to its lowest level in five months, just as the Fourth of July holiday approaches.
"When you can see it under three dollars a gallon you know it's something good," says one driver.
There's nothing regular about the $2.89 on the sign at a Terry Parkway gas station.
"At the beginning of the year they said it was going to $4.00 a gallon," said a surprised Monica Tate, a West Bank cab driver.
Don Redman of AAA says the prices are a response to the fact that there is a lot of financial uncertainty in the world right now.
"In early April, prices statewide were $3.50 a gallon, marching up to potential $4.00. By the middle of April those prices started coming down as the price of crude and wholesale gasoline started coming down." said Redman.
He says crude oil was as high as $110.00 a barrel in the last few months; it was down to $79.00 Tuesday afternoon.
"We planned a trip just because the gas prices have gone down," said one woman buying gas.
"There's no doubt cheap fuel acts as an economic stimulus to the family," Redman said. "They are going to have money now to spend on travel."
