Houma, La. - A Lafourche Parish sheriff's deputy has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old girl in Terrebonne Parish.
According to Sheriff Craig Webre, 40-year-old Murphy J. Melancon II of Bourg confessed to being in a sexual relationship with the teenager since February. Melancon, who had been assigned to the Patrol Division with the sheriff's department, has been fired from his job.
Deputies say Melancon did not have sex with the girl while on duty. Terrebonne deputies say the girl's parents called authorities after she ran away from home on Monday. Through that investigation, deputies learned of the alleged relationship between the teen and the deputy.
Melancon has been booked with a felony count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and is in the Terrebonne Parish jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
