New York, NY- Arrest me Elmo? Central Park Police hauled off a profanity-hurling, anti-Semitic ranting, erratic character in an Elmo suit who was anything but warm and fuzzy.
For some time now, the impersonator dressed up as the Sesame Street character has been hanging out in busy locales around New York City, shouting at passersby and drawing the attention of stunned parents, bewildered children and gawkers armed with cell phone cameras.
At one confrontation in Times Square, a crowd cheered as a Shrek-costumed man shooed the red ranter away.
Monday, Central Park Police decided the foul-mouthed furry had gone too far. They hauled him to an awaiting ambulance in handcuffs.
He wasn't arrested, but instead taken to a hospital for psychological evaluation.
Character impersonators are a common sight on New York streets where they earn a few bucks posing for photographs with kids and tourists. With their reputation at stake, the other Elmos are tickled the nasty Elmo is gone.
