Highway 11 bridge reopened, but fix is only temporary

Updated:

New Orleans, LA – The Highway 11 Bridge is back open after undergoing some short-term repair work, but it may need to be closed again to undergo permanent repairs.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) reopened the bridge to traffic Friday morning at 9:45.  Marine traffic is partially open.  Last month, DOTD had to close the structure to vehicular traffic due to a serious mechanical malfunction with the draw bridge.  DOTD officials say the repairs only represent a short-term fix, and say the bridge may need to be closed again sometime in August.

DOTD is preparing plans and documents to accept bids to secure a contractor to complete the permanent repairs.  That is expected to take about six weeks.  Once the state determines the scope of the repairs, a decision will be made on whether the bridge will have to be closed.   More updates will be provided regarding the length of this closure as additional information becomes available.
