New Orleans, La. -
Thursday is a huge day for the New Orleans Hornets, perhaps the biggest in franchise history.
They will, unless the cow jumps over the proverbial moon, use the number one pick in the NBA draft to select big man Anthony Davis out of Kentucky.
Why wouldn't they? He won the Naismith Award as the men's college basketball player of the year as a freshman. It was the same year he led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament championship, right here in New Orleans this past spring.
I've heard him compared to (hard to fathom) the great Bill Russell in that the forward plays tremendous defense. He's been known to block three point attempts, which shows he not only has length but quickness as well. Of course, Russell had more rings than fingers, but you get my point.
But, I think he's going to blossom into a terrific offensive player. Davis has guard like qualities. He should. He played guard in high school at 6'3". That was before he ate his spinach. He is now 6'10", with the wingspan of an A-300.
Davis is also a quality kid. Never a bit of trouble in high school or college, according to Kentucky coach John Calipari. The kind of character player coach Monty Williams will love coaching.
Anthony Davis, a/k/a 'The Unibrow', simply put is the goods. Perhaps in time, the Saints won't be the only team in town scheduling a parade.
