NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Iberia Parish sheriff's deputies say a father and grandmother are accused of child desertion after a 2-year-old child was found walking on the side of La. Highway 14.
Deputies say a woman found the child Wednesday morning and brought the boy back to her home, then went door-to-door trying to find the child's parents.
After she was unsuccessful, Capt. Ryan Turner says the woman contacted the sheriff's office, which then also went to nearby homes in search of the parents.
Turner says detectives found the father, 29-year-old Jonathan Penley, and the child's grandmother, 68-year-old Della Bearb, at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
He says both were issued summonses for child desertion.
Turner says the toddler is in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.
