(CNN) The Postal Service will make a move the week of July 3rd that will eventually lead to the shutdown of its processing plant in New Orleans.

The postal service says it will begin consolidating and closing dozens processing plants across the nation.

Postal workers hoped the postal service would put off the move, while they appeal plans to shrink their network.

Today, the postal regulatory commission informed the workers it would not get involved.

The processing plant in New Orleans is scheduled to shutdown completely by the end of 2014.

Operations will move to Baton Rouge. The closure will impact 800 positions in New Orleans.

The Postal Service says it needs to consolidate processing because operations are simply too big given declining mail volume.
