84-year-old woman gives away $600 in gas money

Updated:

MANTACHIE, Miss. (AP) - The price of gasoline has gone down since she started helping folks in the northeast Mississippi community of Eggville. But for the fourth year in a row, 84-year-old Virginia Phillips spent a summer day giving $20 each for gas to folks at Hardin's Country Store.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Phillips gave out nearly $600 on Saturday. She'd saved all year, and also had donations from her daughter and two other women.

A few people, like Dudley Hallmark of nearby Mantachie (man-TATCH-ee), asked Phillips to give the money to someone who needed it more.

Tina Wilburn says her mother looks forward all year to her giveaway.

Gasoline at the store cost nearly $4 a gallon four years ago, but was $3.09 this weekend.
