New Orleans, La. -

A two-alarm fire at the old Grand Palace Hotel at Canal and Claiborne led to a traffic nightmare as police closed off part of Interstate 10 and other nearby major roadways.

Reports of the fire first came in around 8:00 Thursday night, when firefighters at a nearby station spotted the flames, which appeared to come from a spot on the fifth floor of the building.  It quickly became a two-alarm fire.

Emergency authorities quickly determined that heavy smoke from the blaze could interfere with nearby traffic, especially on I-10 as it passes close to the old hotel.

The traffic closure on Interstate 10 between O'Keefe and the Slidell exit is now being lifted.  But several nearby streets, including Canal and Claiborne, may remain closed late into the night.

The cause of the fire has yet to be reported.  We know of no injuries at this point.

The hotel has long been an abandoned eyesore, and was slated for demolition on July 22.
