The state has received 10,000 applications for the new voucher program -- far exceeding expectations.
The state is now working with voucher schools to determine the number of seats they can offer.
In a phone conference Wednesday, -- state Education Superintendent John White announced new rules that voucher schools must adhere to in order to participate in the program.
White says 125 schools signed up, but he believes a small number will not qualify under the new rules.
White says it will take about two weeks to determine the number of seats available. Then, they will begin assigning students to schools.
The voucher program is set to start in August, using taxpayer money to send students to private and parochial schools.
As many as 2,000 of the applicants are in an existing New Orleans voucher program. The others will be vying for slots available to new students under the statewide program pushed by Gov. Bobby Jindal.
