Long after Katrina, another N.O. library reopens

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The area of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River known as Algiers has a main library again. On Wednesday, the city reopened its new $9.2 million Algiers Regional Library.

The library was closed after Hurricane Katrina caused extensive roof damage.

The city has reopened five libraries this year. Officials called the reopening of libraries an important aspect of the recovery from Katrina because libraries are used by so many people.

The new two-story Algiers library has a courtyard, a children's reading room, 60 computers, a Wi-Fi hotspot, space for teenagers and meeting rooms.

It was built with a combination of federal rebuilding funds and city bond revenue.
