Child found wandering alone is back with family members

Updated:

Gretna, La. - A little boy found wandering alone on the west bank is back with family members and his parents are in police custody.

Gretna Police say a passerby found the child and called police. Officers found five year-old Leonard Hill walking near the West Bank Expressway and Manhattan Blvd.

They picked him up and brought him to the police station.

The grandparents of the child saw him on FOX 8 News at noon and showed up at the Gretna Police Department.

At the same time, the police department received a call from a local hospital who recognized the boy from treatment.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says the child's mother and stepfather have been arrested.

Laura Hilton and Levon Jones will be charged with child desertion. A spokesman with the JPSO says even after the mother was contacted, she nor the stepfather made any attempt to find Leonard.
