Heavy rainfall lashes Lafourche Parish

The Lafourche Parish Department of Public Works announced this afternoon that heavy rainfall associated with a weather front moving across the area is causing street flooding in the lower parts of the parish.

Director of Public Works Kerry Babin said the crews are currently out in the field to assess and monitor the situation.

Babin also said he is encouraging residents to avoid driving in areas where streets are flooded. The heaviest rainfall has occurred in Cut Off, Galliano and Golden Meadow.

Babin said that the Galliano Field Office has recorded 8 inches of rainfall.

"Drainage is now catching up," Babin said. "Crews are out looking for obstructions and approximately 300 sandbags have been handed out by the Galliano Field Office." Thus far, no structures have been flooded.

The National Weather Service reports this afternoon that 2 to 4 inches of rain is possible over most of the area, and that a Flash Flood Warning is still in effect for the region.
