Uptown fire destroys former gas station, damages home next door

New Orleans, La. –The New Orleans Fire Department responded to a fire in a former gas station and car repair shop located in the 3700 block of Constance Street Monday morning.

The abandoned building is located at the corner of Constance and Peniston Streets.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:53 a.m. finding the two-story former automobile service station fully engulfed causing a second alarm to strike immediately.

Firefighters rescued two dogs from the occupied single family home next door, which also suffered heavy fire damage to the side and rear closest to the service station as well as in its attic.

Investigators say the fire was sparked by contractors hired to remove old fuel storage tanks from the facility which was undergoing renovation.

The fire was under control at 11:44 a.m.

No injuries were reported.
