Chalmette, La. - St. Bernard Parish deputies arrested a 20 year-old New Orleans man and booked him with the aggravated rape of a pre-teenage Chalmette girl who investigators say he knew.

Andrew Smith was arrested on July 20 outside the apartment complex where the alleged rape happened. He was spending the weekend at the juvenile's home with her mother. St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann said her mother had left him with her daughter.

Deputies say when they approached Smith he said, "I know why you're here, because I had sex with a younger female."

The alleged victim told deputies she was sleeping when Smith came into her room, woke her up and locked the door. Investigators say he placed one hand over her mouth and forced her to have sex.

Authorities say when Smith left the girl's room, she ran and called her mother.

Smith is being held in the St. Bernard Parish Prison in lieu of bond set at $500,000.

Aggravated rape of a juvenile is punishable by a sentenced of up to life in prison.
