Shreveport workers laid off by GM closing to get help

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Hundreds of workers faced with layoffs when a General Motors assembly plant in Shreveport closes this fall are getting some help from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The Labor Department said Tuesday that it's setting aside $2 million to help 450 workers who lose their jobs find new work.

The money will be spent on helping workers find new jobs and get new training. The laid off workers also will be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits, which become available when workers who lose their jobs due to imports.

The GM plant and three suppliers - Android Industries LLC, Johnson Controls and Voith Industrial Services Inc. - are expected to start closing in August.
