Lacombe, LA – Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two-car crash that claimed the life of a Covington man. The accident occurred Wednesday at 5:40 a.m. at the intersection of the Interstate 12 eastbound off ramp and LA 434 in Lacombe, LA. The victim has been identified as 62-year-old Eulalio Hernandez.
Police say that the crash occurred as Hernandez was exiting I-12 eastbound. After coming to a stop and the end of the exit ramp, Hernandez failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck on the driver's side by an oncoming SUV that was traveling south on LA 434. Both vehicles came to rest within the intersection.
The driver of the SUV was wearing a seatbelt and received no injuries in the crash.
Hernandez was also wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was transported to University Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries.
Troopers don't believe that alcohol or drug impairment played a role in the crash. Toxicology results are pending.
