New Orleans, La. - A gas leak forced New Orleans police and firefighters to evacuate residents from a four-block radius in the Lower 9th Ward Wednesday afternoon.

NOPD now reports the gas leak, near the 5400 block of St. Claude Avenue, has been brought under control.

"The safety advisory is now minimal in the area," reads an alert from NOPD at 5:10 p.m. "Saint Claude Avenue is partially open but remains closed between Flood and Andry Streets in the Lower 9th Ward.  We will update you when the area is completely cleared for traffic."

All residents in that area were asked to please stay indoors if they chose not to evacuate and also to avoid using lighters or matches until the situation was cleared.
