Second human case of West Nile discovered in Jefferson Parish

Updated:

Jefferson Parish, La.-- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has confirmed that a person living in the River Ridge area is infected with West Nile Encephalitis.

According to the DHH, this is the second case found in Jefferson Parish this year.  Also, it is the 19th human case in Louisiana confirmed this week.

The DHH reports that there are 33 human cases in total confirmed throughout the year in the state of Louisiana.

In response, Mosquito Control Services has increased its mosquito abatement efforts.  They have been spraying at elevated levels, handing out pamphlets to educated people on the issue.

A press release sent from the DHH reminds residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes carrying the virus by taking the following steps:

      • Inspect your yard to insure that mosquitoes are not using it as a nursery. Even that smallest item holding water can breed mosquitoes! Check everything in your yard (including flower pot saucers, bird baths, tires, toys, buckets, etc.) For items that routinely hold water like bird baths, make sure that you flush with clean water at least once a week. If you have a pool, make sure that it is kept clean and that pumps are operating.

     • Protect yourself and your family by reducing your exposure to mosquito bites. Keep mosquitoes out of your home by making sure that all doors and windows fit tightly and that any torn window screens are repaired. Limit the time you spend outdoors around dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active (dusk and dawn).

     • Cover up when outside, wearing long sleeves and trousers, and use a mosquito repellant; making sure to follow all label directions.
