Heat advisory in effect until Monday evening

Updated:

New Orleans, La.- Meteorologists say afternoon heat index values over 108 degrees are expected throughout the day Monday.

The National Weather Service reports a hot and humid air mass will remain over the area, and afternoon temperatures combined with high humidity will drive heat index values quite high resulting in increased heat stress levels.

In addition, some heat index values could reach up to 110 degrees this afternoon into the early evening hours.

Meteorologists warn residents that a heat advisory means a period of hot temperatures is expected and the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

Officials suggest residents drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

The heat advisory is in effect for most of Louisiana until 7 p.m. Monday evening.
