New Orleans, La. - New rules aimed at improving taxi service in New Orleans won't take effect for a little while longer.
The new rules were supposed to go into effect Wednesday. But Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Eldon Fallon extended a temporary restraining order against the changes until a new hearing in two weeks.
Fallon initially extended the restraining order until Friday because he is tied up with a jury trial in a different case. A spokesman for the judge says there was a telephone status conference Tuesday, during which all parties agreed to the extension.
The next hearing has been set for August 14 at 9:00 a.m.
The reforms include a new permitting process and a requirement of all cabs to have GPS devices, credit card machines and security cameras. Cab drivers say the new rules will cost them too much and complain they weren't given enough time to absorb the changes.
