© Morgan wrestles ball away from AJ Davis for catch
A new practice time meant a new spark for the Saints defense; the day belonged to that side of the ball.
The defense seemed to have an extra gear on Tuesday. They applied steady pressure on all the quarterbacks and seemed to be more of the aggressors.
It's good to see solid competition between the two sides in training camp. But perhaps the most encouraging sign is that the players we talked with feel like defenders are starting to gel under the new Steve Spagnuolo scheme.
Play of the Day I
Marquis Johnson made an incredibly athletic interception when Cam Jordan tipped a Drew Brees pass and Johnson scooped it up just before it touched the ground.
Play of the Day II
Luke McCown threw a deep ball to Joe Morgan that should have been picked off but Morgan went up and stole the ball away from A.J.Davis for the catch.
Sound bite of the Day
"Yeah, I think we tried to scheme it up today. They've been getting a pretty good beat on us. So we threw in some things, just a couple of wrinkles to keep them on their toes." -- LB David Hawthorne on defensive performance.
Other Observations
- Johnson also made another nice break on a ball and knocked down a pass intended for Jimmy Graham. Johnson along with Corey White and Johnny Patrick make the 3rd CB battle one of camp's most intriguing.
- With Patrick Robinson out Jabari Greer missing most of practice, Johnson and White were the first team corners today.
- Brees and Marques Colston make the vertical route with three defenders around Colston look too easy. That throw and catch are incredibly difficult to make, but it's become routine to them.
- Do the Saints keep six wide receivers? It's the only way Nick Toon, Adrian Arrington and Joe Morgan are ALL on this roster.
- I made a point to key on the defensive line Thursday and the one player that jumped off the page was Martez Wilson. Wilson has great explosion off the line and played both side at end. He would have had two sacks if he'd been allowed to touch the quarterback.
