Jefferson, La. - All lanes of the Huey P. Long Bridge will close Friday, August 3rd at 10 p.m. until noon on Saturday, August 4th. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says workers need to shut the bridge down so they can pour concrete for the new, wider lanes.

The left lanes in both directions will remain closed until 5 a.m. on August 6th. Large trucks will not be allowed on the bridge until all the lanes have reopened.

Once completed the new bridge will have 11-foot lanes in each direction plus an eight-foot outside lane and two-foot inside shoulders. The state says the total width will more than double from the current infamously narrow driving surface.

The entire project is set to be complete in 2013.

Drivers who need to cross the Mississippi River this weekend can use the Crescent City Connection or the I-310 bridge in Luling.
