FOX - Some researchers say you may want to skip popcorn the next time you catch a movie.

According to University of Minnesota scientists, an ingredient responsible for popcorn's buttery flavor and smell may be linked to Alzheimer's disease.

The ingredient is called diacetyl.  The substance has been found to increase proteins in the brain that cause Alzheimer's.

Scientists decided to focus on this substance because recent studies associate it with respiratory problems for workers at microwave popcorn and food-flavoring factories.

You can read more about the study in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.
