Marrero, La. - A 16-year-old student at Higgins High School was arrested on Wednesday for  bringing a loaded semi-automatic gun to school.

A spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says the assistant principal at the Marrero high school received a tip that the student had the gun in his school bag.  The assistant principal called the JPSO, who sent an officer to the school.

After locating the student in a classroom, the officer located the gun in the student's backpack and arrested him.  The unidentified teenager has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm on school grounds and illegal possession of a stolen firearm.  The gun was reported stolen in New Orleans last month.

The student was taken to the juvenile assessment center and booked with the charges.
