Updated:

Laplace, La. - Louisiana State Police now confirm they have seven people in custody in connection with Thursday's deadly ambush where two St. John Parish deputies were killed and two others were wounded.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said at a Friday news conference that he has met with most of his officers and most appear to be holding up.

Tregre said he visited the families of the slain officers Thursday night and also visited the two wounded deputies at the hospital. He called the deputies heroes.

Louisiana State Police said that police had charged 44 year-old Terry Smith; 22-year-old Derrick Smith; 28 year-old Kyle David Joekel; and 21 year-old Teniecha Bright with principle to attempted first-degree murder.

24 year-old Brian Lyn Smith was charged with attempted first-degree murder, while 37 year-old Chanel Skains was charged with being an accessory after the fact. 23 year-old Britney Keith is also in custody charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Officials would not discuss the criminal backgrounds of the suspects, nor did they give any further details about what sparked the shooting or how it unfolded.
