Family remembers slain St. John Parish Deputy

New Orleans, LA --The family of one of the slain St. John Parish Sheriff's deputies say their lives have been turned upside down since getting the news that 34-year-old Brandon Nielsen died in the Thursday morning ambush.

For the family of the Nielsen, knowing they'll never get their daily texts is slowly becoming a reality.

"I watched them type his name up on the screen, I named him, so to see his name to go up on a death certificate is not possible, I put it on a birth certificate, says" Victim's Mother, Wendy Nielsen.

Nielsen was a die hard Saints fan and he always wanted to be a law enforcement officer.

"This was something he was born to do it was inbred in him. It was in his veins this kids wanted to be a police officer from the time I can remember," says Wendy Nielsen.

"He was a very good servant for the people no matter what department he was in," says victim's Dad, Steve Nielsen.

The family tried to put it in the back of their minds that one day the phone might ring with the call that every family of a law enforcement officer dreads.

Their call came early Thursday morning.

When Brandon's wife called to say he and 27-year-old Jeremy Triche had been shot and killed while investigating a shooting.

The Nielsen's don't want the men accused of taking his life to overshadow his legacy.

Nobody can describe the pain of losing a child no matter what their profession was," says Steve Nielsen.

"He had five kids he's leaving them a legacy. I had my last conversation with him, and he told me he loved me," says Wendy Nielsen.

An "I Love You" that will last his mother a lifetime.

Funeral arrangements have been made for both deputies.

Visitation for Deputy Jeremy Triche will be Sunday starting at 5:00 p.m. at the New Wine Christian Fellowship in Laplace.

His funeral will be held the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on Monday.

Then on Tuesday, a visitation will be held for Deputy Brandon Nielsen beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Lakelawn Funeral home.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at Lakelawn Cemetery.

I usually leave a Saints game with an overall theme or feeling about what I just observed on the field. It typically jumps out at me right away and this column is written. But after Sunday I was left with kind of a blah emotion. Their effort against the Jets was kind of weird. It certainly wasn’t an overly impressive victory to celebrate, but nonetheless, a win in the NFL by double digits is nothing they have to apologize for. Dodging a bullet may be the more accurate descript...

Juan's World: Saints ground Jets, look to Falcons rematch

Welcome in to Juan's World and as you know, this blog that I do is strictly an opinion piece with a few facts sprinkled in here and there. So, with that in mind, I'm under the opinion that the Saints should've been 'expected' to look past the Jets to next weeks rematch with the Falcons. How could they not look ahead to Atlanta coming to the dome next Sunday. And before you go all 'One Game at a Time' on me, think for a second. You're supposed to beat the Jets, who came in 5-8 and wi...
