New Orleans, La. - The Hornets announced a multi-year extension with head coach Monty Williams early Sunday morning. FOX 8 Sports has learned the deal is for four years keeping Williams with the Hornets through 2016.
Williams was hired on June 7, 2010 and has a record of 67-81 through two seasons of tumultuousness. He, along with general manager Dell Demps, have withstood a change in ownership and the trade of franchise player Chris Paul in their two years in New Orleans.
"We could not be any happier to have someone of Monty's quality – both professionally and personally – involved in the resurgence of this franchise,"said owner, Tom Benson.
Hornets Executive Vice President Mickey Loomis echoed that sentiment saying, "The Hornets have a promising future and an exciting young nucleus. It is our opinion that Monty is the perfect coach to develop and lead this group of talent going forward."
Williams finished 7th in Coach of the Year voting for the 2010-11 season and even garnered votes this past season despite his team's 21-66 record.
"I would like to thank Mr. Benson, his family, Mickey and Dell for putting their trust in me and showing me their commitment," said Williams. "The love and support the city and its fans have shown me and my family in the time we have been here has been incredible and I look forward to continuing to work to make the city and the Benson family proud of the Hornets."
