Work crews start drilling at Assumption Parish sinkhole site

Bayou Corne, La. - Engineers started drilling an exploratory well Monday in Assumption Parish.

They're trying to figure out what caused a large Bayou Corne sinkhole, and how to stop it from growing.

Once they get to a caprock that sits on top of an underground salt dome, they'll be able to do a better job of investigating the problem.

A mandatory evacuation of the area near the site could be in place for at least two months.
