Escaped Tangipahoa inmate, taken into custody

Hammond, LA – Tangipahoa Sheriff's Deputies have arrested an inmate who escaped from their custody. Officers noticed the man missing Thursday around 10:00 p.m. as they were closing a maintenance shop on Hwy 51 in Amite.  Police located 36-year-old John Johnson, who was found on the Tangipahoa River about three miles North of Hwy 190.

Police say that is normal procedure for trustee inmates to wait near the police car as the officer locks up the shop. When the officer approached his car, he noticed that Johnson was gone. The officer immediately notified communications and a search began.

Deputies were unable to locate Johnson. Detectives learned that he was picked up and fled the area in a vehicle.

Terri Sowash, 35; Patrick Snedden, 43; Stephen Johnson, 17; and Judy Johnson, 66; all of Ponchatoula were arrested Friday morning and charged with principle to simple escape.

Police learned that John Johnson was dropped off at the Tangipahoa River on Morris Road, where he was provided with a canoe and supplies.
