New Orleans, La. - FOX 8 has learned the University of New Orleans has washed its hands of the old Pontchartrain Beach site along the Lakefront.

This month, UNO terminated its 35 year lease of the property, 15 years early.

UNO shut down beach access in May after a couple of people drowned there earlier this year.

There were "no swimming" signs posted, but people continued to ignore the warnings.

UNO was responsible for policing the area, however, now the property will be under the control of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority.

The Orleans Levee District Police Department is now overseeing patrols of the area.
