St. Bernard Parish officials are accepting applications from older residents who wish to claim an exemption from a proposed $32 fire protection fee.
FOX 8 News received the following press release from St. Bernard Parish Government Friday:
Applications for exemptions from the $32 Fire Protection Fee are being accepted from residents 65 and older whose household income is less than $67,601.00 per year. Applications must be submitted to the Chief Administrative Officer's Office on the 2nd floor of the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex, located at 8201 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette. Applications must be turned in by August 31st to be CONSIDERED for an exemption during the first month. Applications that are not received and approved by the August 31st deadline will not receive the exemption until October if eligible. Retroactive exemptions will not be given. All applications will be reviewed by the Chief Administrative Officer.

Parish council members are expected on Sept. 4 to discuss a ballot measure that would replace the $32 annual fee with a property tax millage increase of 20 mills. Voters would decide on that measure on Dec. 8.
