Plaquemines Parish announces flood gate, bridge closure plans

EMPIRE, La. (AP) - Plaquemines Parish officials say they have closed the Empire floodgate as Tropical Storm Isaac nears.

Authorities said no boat traffic will be permitted through the gate until further notice.

FOX 8 News received the following press releases Monday evening:

Belle Chasse - Effective tonight, August 27, 2012, at 8pm, the Doullut Canal Bridge on Hwy 11 in Empire, LA will be locked in the down position and closed to all boat traffic. In addition, the flood gate on Hwy 39 at the Plaquemines Parish/St. Bernard Parish line will also be closed at 8pm.

The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office will provide an alternative emergency access lane at that location for emergency vehicles, and local residents with ID. Also only local residents will be allowed below the Oakville Flood Gate on Hwy 23.
