JP asks for National Guard help for Lafitte, Barataria

Lafitte, La. - Jefferson Parish has issued an emergency request for help in shoring up storm protection for Lafitte and Barataria.  Councilman Chris Robert says the request was put in to Governor Jindal's office Tuesday morning, asking for the National Guard troops to help with the levee system.

Roberts says the parish brought in a new company to install what's known as tubes along Bayou Barataria, which would have added an additional five feet of surge protection along the bayou.

Jefferson Parish President John Young confirms there is one section of levee where the tubes were positioned incorrectly.  He says the company is currently working to fortify the area and that workers are also sandbagging along Bayou Barataria.  Young says pumps are also in place to deal with high water. Both Young and Roberts say more help is needed and they are awaiting word of extra help, possibly from the National Guard.
