Chris Rose: Isaac

A trusted colleague asked me this morning: What are you gonna write about?

I told him I knew what I was writing about. I just didn't know which part.

"Resilience!" he said.

I paused. I doubted. But he's hardly ever wrong.

On one hand, it seems premature. Not everyone is home. Not everyone is alright. Not everyone has had the chance to express their resilience yet.

Then again, I look around, and I see... we're still standing.

Some are standing in water, some in mud, yes, but we're here, we're gonna stay, we're gonna fix this place up. Again.

Because it's home. It's what we do. And this is the way we do it.

In rubber boots, Saints ball caps, ratty Jazzfest T-shirts and – in the French Quarter this weekend – in size 16 dresses and sturdy heels.

Decadence. Resilience. Is there really that big a bridge between the two?

They both say the same thing. I could put it in vulgar terms more easily – and accurately – but let's just go with this: They say we're still here. We're still standing. And we ain't goin' nowhere else.

My family is from Maryland but I have a sister who lives in a part of central Florida that gets laid to waste by hurricanes and tornadoes biannually, and a brother who lives in Houston – no stranger to flooding and wind.

And I live here.

They've got their reasons. I've got mine. We – not my family, but everybody – live where we live because it's home.

Home is where you say it is. It's the place you choose to claim and the people you choose to claim it with.

And this is mine. This is ours. This is New Orleans. This is southeast Louisiana.

God's Country, hardly anyone ever calls it.

But look around you today and tell me it's anything but.

That colleague of mine with his story ideas. He's hardly ever wrong.
