New Orleans, La. -- Police have arrested the boyfriend of an Algiers woman and charged him with killing her.

27-year-old Gary Burnett allegedly shot 35-year-old Shonray Lee to death early Wednesday morning in Lee's home in the 2000 block of Hendee Street.

"Detectives found Lee near the bottom of the staircase on the first floor. She was bleeding from the back," reads a news release from NOPD.   "As investigators walked through the residence, they noticed a trail of blood starting from the master bedroom, and also recovered a bullet casing from that room. Lee was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Coroner's Officer stated that she died of a gunshot wound to the back and to the chest."

Investigators interviewing several neighbors and learned that Lee had a "tumultuous" relationship with Burnett.  "Some of the people interviewed said they heard a 'boom', which was followed by what sounded like someone falling down stairs," the statement continues. "They also heard Lee's children yelling inside the home for someone to, 'Help my mama!'"

Detectives found Burnett at his home in the 4400 block of MacArthur Boulevard, and he agreed to go to the NOPD's Homicide Division for interviewing.  He was then booked with second degree murder.
