Fire rips through Slidell fire station

Updated:

Slidell, La.-  The St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1 Station 14 caught fire Saturday morning causing severe damage to the building.

It happened just after 11:30 a.m. at 297 Steele Road just off of Military Road.

Investigators say an engine bay, where fire hoses and equipment are stored, caught fire.  Fire officials say it took 20 firefighters 23 minutes to get the situation under control.

"The station is about 50% damaged and we will have to relocate the District 1 station to the Station 17 located near the intersection of Brownswitch and Robert Roads for now," said Chief of Administration Chris Kaufmann.

The hose tender, a large truck used to carry fire hoses, was destroyed along with the personal vehicles of three firefighters.

Investigators say the fire appears to be electrical related, but the investigation is not complete.
